Jurors’ Statement for Arts for the Maine State Parks

and Baxter State Park

The mission and theme of this juried exhibition was especially appealing to both of us. We both paint landscapes; we have both taught studio art; and we have both climbed numerous times to the top of Katahdin and basked in the sublime beauty of Maine’s heralded zenith is famously a worthy subject for painting. The Harlow Gallery show, however, offered us a subtle twist on the subject: whereas so many depictions of the topography of our state are made to tell the rest of the world about Maine ‘s beauty, this is a show of Maine artists painting treasured places of their home state. So rather than playing the handsome muse for artists from away, the images of Maine we selected reveal an emotional depth rife with memory, experience and often loving attachment

It was no surprise that much of the work presents the viewer with the quick or loose mark-making associated with plein-air painting rather than the finished density of academic studio production. The final selections bubbled to the top through a variety of strengths, not limited to: authenticity, sense of place, narrative, composition, humor, finish, and the entire gamut of qualities typically associated with appealing paintings

We both have truly enjoyed the process of selecting the works for the exhibition and the prize-winners. As well, we feel honored and fortunate to work with the able staff and volunteers of the Harlow Gallery. –Tom Higgins & Daniel Kany, Jurors
