“Whoop and Drive ‘er”: David Estey Book-Signing at The Harlow Gallery
Announcing an art talk and book signing by award-winning Belfast artist David Estey on Sunday, November 16, 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Estey’s new book is a humorous, illustrated memoir called“Whoop and Drive ’er” – Growing up in Aroostook County, Maine. At the presentation on the 16th, Estey will discuss and read from his book, show related artwork, and personally sign copies of the book. His art will include a portrait of his Uncle “Clarence Hilyard,” a Maine guide and owner of the Katahdin Lake Camps in the 1960s, which is included in the exhibition “Inspired by Katahdin”, on view at the gallery November 7-29, 2014.
The artist describes “Whoop and Drive ’er” – Growing up in Aroostook County, Maine as a labor of love, a personal piece of Americana about colorful family members, friends, characters and situations he experienced while growing up in Fort Fairfield, Presque Isle, and Belfast during the 1940s and ’50s and during 42 years away. Although the unique memoir begins in Aroostook County, he includes his years at Crosby High School in Belfast, going to Rhode Island School of Design, studying art in Italy for a year, spending four years illustrating for the army during the Vietnam war, managing public affairs for IRS, dealing with the news media, living in the South, enjoying a second career as an award-winning artist, and his return to Belfast in 2002.
The book is endorsed on the back cover by Carl Little, distinguished poet and author of several books on Maine painting, and Kathryn Olmstead, editor of Echoes magazine and a columnist for Bangor Daily News. Carl wrote, in part, “In this entertaining and often moving memoir … vintage photographs and Estey’s portraits and paintings are the perfect accompaniment to a storyline that will leave you laughing and inspire a tear or two.” Kathryn wrote, in part, “David’s memoir is laced with humor and filled with anecdotes that make it a tribute to small-town America.”
The 144-page memoir is an attractive art book, seven by ten inches, with 41 photos or drawings and paintings he produced over the years. It will be available for $19.95 at the Gallery and online at maineauthorspublishing.com and on amazon.com.
