November ArtTalk: Rick DeBruin on Buildings in Bottles

Join us on Thursday, November 11 at 7pm at the Harlow Gallery to discover how Rick DeBruin constructs buildings inside bottles. He’ll be demonstrating some of the techniques and tools he uses to build from the ground up; and showing bottles in various stages of completion. The Harlow’s 2010 ArtTalk series is sponsored by Savings Bank of Maine.

Rick DeBruin recently moved to Hallowell and calls himself a “frustrated architect”. He first became interested in buildings in bottles over 30 years ago after reading an article about Ron Roush, a Californian who was building houses as well as ships in bottles. Rick picked up some bottles, scrap wood, and a very long needle and practiced, eventually earning commissions for homes, camps and even store fronts in bottles. After taking a long hiatus, he decided to “hit the bottle” again a couple of years ago. He’s been working on a series of lobster shacks, combining his interest in architecture with his love of the Maine seacoast.
