The Harlow Gallery is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year with a series of exhibitions celebrating community in 2013. This July, in partnership with the Vaughan Homestead Foundation, artist members of the Kennebec Valley Art Association will present Vaughan Vignettes, an art exhibition celebrating the legacy of the Vaughan family in Hallowell. The two organizations are offering a series of art workshops to give artists opportunities to create art on the grounds of Vaughan Homestead this winter and into spring.
The art exhibition, Vaughan Vignettes, will take place at the Harlow Gallery in Hallowell July 5 – 27, 2013, with an opening reception on Friday, July 5, 5-8pm. Artists must be current members of the Kennebec Valley Art Association to participate in the art show, but the workshop series is open to everyone. Introduction to Bookmaking
Open to anyone who wants to learn how to make their own journal or sketchbook using a traditional book binding technique. All materials will be provided, but if you have specific paper you want to use on your cover, please bring it along. Participants will bind (sew) their own book together using waxed linen string and make a hard cover front and back to finish off their book. Hallowell artist and teacher Jen Paisley has made over 30 books in the past year and has taught bookmaking techniques to her students at Hall-Dale Middle School.

Capturing the Beauty of Antique Objects in a Still Life Painting
Whether you are an accomplished painter or a beginner, come and enjoy a day of painting and fun at the Vaughan Homestead with Chelsea artist Sandra Leinonen Dunn. Ms. Dunn will give a painting demonstration and share information about how to paint a successful still life from composition to color mixing. All aspects of still life painting will be touched upon. Students may work in oils or acrylics. Students will choose from several still life set-ups made up of a rich variety of antique items from Vaughan collection. Individual instruction will be offered throughout the day and the afternoon will end with a group critique. This class will be fun and informal – come join us for a day of fun and creativity! A materials list will be provided upon registration.

Introduction to Pinhole Photography on World Pinhole Photography Day
Learn about pinhole photography and join in a community outing using the Vaughan Homestead as your muse. Join Johanna Moore in a discussion about the history and techniques of Pinhole Photography. Examples of Solargraphy and pinhole cameras by Polaroid, Sharan, and Holga will be on display. Reference material for those interested in pursuing this fun and rewarding art form will be available. Optional: The group will then spend the afternoon producing images on the grounds of the Vaughan Homestead and in Vaughan Woods. Join Johanna in assembling your own Pinhole camera to use on World Pinhole Day. Attendees can purchase a Sharan cardboard 35mm camera, bring it to the Harlow Gallery and assemble it as a group. The cameras are intricate but well designed and take a couple hours to fold and put together. For those are interested in using photographic paper who have access to a darkroom, Johanna will show you how to construct a paint can & cardboard tube camera.

Plein-Air Oil Painting at Vaughan Homestead
Instructor: J. Thomas R. Higgins, Professor Emeritus, University of Maine Farmington.
For the painter with some experience in wet-into-wet oil technique, who seeks the rewards and challenges of working spontaneously, from direct observation, at a historic site overlooking the Kennebec River. The instructor will provide a painting demonstration and individual instruction. Participants will share their creative experiences at the end of the workshop. Plan to pack a lunch and picnic on the grounds. Upon registration, the Harlow Gallery will provide you with a list of suggested supplies and equipment.
A plein air painter of the first degree, Tom Higgins balances both art and nature – the act of painting and the subject of his painting – in equal measure at the tip of his brush. His enthusiasm for his subject – usually a respectful view of a solitary Maine prospect – and his interest in technique, applying paint quickly before the moment passes, has propelled him to the front ranks of contemporary Maine landscape painters.
