The Artists of Hallowell

For the month of July the Harlow Gallery will proudly present The Artists of Hallowell an exhibition of work by the amazingly diverse and talented artists who live in our hometown.

The public is invited to the opening celebration on Friday, July 1st from 5-8pm, featuring a “CULINARY ARTS SHOWCASE” with signature dishes provided by Hallowell restaurants, caterers and bakers! PLUS entertainment by Hallowell musicians Steve Vellani and Roger Sampson. All free and open to the public!

The Artists of Hallowell, on view through July 29th, is being sponsored by Hallowell businesses, including Dead River Company, Sustainable Structures, Inc. and Mattson’s Flooring and Lighting.

The exhibition will include a display of work by Hallowell artist Paul Plumer, honoring his memory.   Paul died just over a year ago, in May 2010.  He was born in Augusta in 1936 and educated in Hallowell and Gardiner schools, graduating from Gardiner Area High School in 1956. He served in the Air Force until 1961. He studied art at Ecole Nationale Des Beaux Arts Et Des Arts Appliques, Nancy, France, followed by study at The Art Center School of Design in Los Angeles, now located in Pasadena, Calif.

He began working as a freelance illustrator in Los Angeles, where he produced work for ABC television. He returned to Maine in 1963 and worked for Ad-Media Inc. in Augusta until 1965, when he started his own commercial art and illustration studio in a barn adjacent to his home. For more than 40 years, he worked in watercolors, oils, drawings, architectural renderings, sculpting and woodcarving. He is missed and remembered fondly by his many friends and neighbors in Hallowell.

Every Friday through July, the Harlow Gallery will be hosting Performing Arts Showcase evenings featuring Hallowell talent.

There’s still time to sign up! Hallowell based poets, songwriters, authors and actors interested in performing at one of the showcase evenings are invited to contact event organizer Bryan Luciano at: or via the event page on Facebook.
